About the Department
It was established in 1993 as a department of the Faculty of Engineering. It began education in the 1993-1994 academic year with 21 students at the Mersin Metropol building. In the 1994-1995 academic year, it moved to part of the Mersin Vocational School building on the University's Çiftlikköy campus. Between 1994 and 1997, teaching continued in the classrooms and laboratories of the Mersin Vocational School. The 1996-1997 academic year was completed in a classroom allocated to our department in the Faculty of Engineering Classroom Block, whose construction was completed the same year. Teaching still continues in three classrooms in the same building. Laboratory practices and research studies are carried out in 18 laboratories belonging to our department in the Laboratory Building completed in 2003. The department offers undergraduate students a program in which they can gain knowledge and skills in physical, chemical and biological sciences together with the processing, storage, transport, production and development of foods. The department has master's and doctoral programs under the Food Engineering Department within the Mersin University Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences.
