About the Department

The aim of the Faculty of Medicine is to train contemporary, inquisitive and investigative physicians who are equipped with a high level of knowledge, skills and attitudes, who practice their profession in line with ethical and deontological principles, who embrace lifelong learning, and who are aware of their country's health problems.

In addition to traditional applied medical education, our faculty runs a system-based, integrated education programme aligned with global changes and developments. The programme incorporates active learning activities such as evidence-based and community-based medical practices, professional skills, communication skills and problem-based learning sessions. Within this holistic, patient-centred system, the normal structure and functions of the human organism are covered in the first two years, while structural and functional disorders are addressed in an integrated way in the third year. Professional skills laboratories provide hands-on experience with models, and communication skills training begins in these years. In the fourth and fifth years, education continues with clinical internships, and in the sixth and final year (the internship year) students broaden their experience by interacting directly with patients and taking on responsibilities.

Our faculty comprises three departments — Basic, Internal and Surgical Medical Sciences — which together host 42 majors and 32 branches of science. A large academic staff of professors, associate professors, assistant professors and lecturers supports the programme; research assistants pursue postgraduate specialty and subspecialty training while a large number of students receive undergraduate education. Our hospital provides services in a modern building equipped with a full range of diagnostic and treatment facilities.

Mersin University Faculty of Medicine was established by law dated 3 July 1992, commenced operations with the appointment of a founding dean on 17 April 1998, and began education in the 1998-1999 academic year. On 15 March 1999, the Research and Practice Hospital opened with a 200-bed hospital and polyclinic building, and the Yenişehir Campus entered service the same year. The faculty produced its first graduates in the 2003-2004 academic year and has trained a large number of physicians since its foundation.

Our undergraduate medical education programme is accredited by the National Medical Education Accreditation Board (UTEAK) of the Association for Evaluation and Accreditation of Medical Education Programs (TEPDAD). Following the evaluations, our programme's accreditation has been maintained until 1 January 2031. In addition, several of our departments hold certificates of competence for postgraduate specialty training.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the programme earn the title of medical doctor (physician). They may continue with specialty training through the Medical Specialty Examination (TUS); work in public and private hospitals, family health centres and primary care institutions, and in the field of preventive medicine. An academic career path through graduate education is also available.
