Biology Program

The Biology Program of Mersin University was established in 1992 and offers a four-year undergraduate education, as well as Master’s and Ph.D. programs. The academic staff of the program includes 10 professors, 2 associate professors, 1 assistant professor, and 3 research assistants. The program consists of four main divisions: General Biology, Molecular Biology, Botany, and Zoology.

Students in the Biology Program receive both theoretical and practical training. The curriculum is designed to develop not only scientific knowledge and laboratory skills but also the ability to work individually and in teams, improve academic communication skills, and adopt professional work ethics specific to the field of biology. Students are encouraged to participate in and organize scientific and social activities such as congresses, symposiums, conferences, and panels.

Within the framework of the ERASMUS exchange program, students who meet the necessary requirements are given the opportunity to study or complete internships at partner universities abroad, gaining valuable academic and cultural experience.

Graduates of the Biology Program can pursue teaching careers in educational institutions after obtaining the required pedagogical formation. They are also employed in various sectors such as the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, as well as in the food and pharmaceutical industries, fisheries, agricultural control services, wastewater treatment plants, quality control, and research and development (R&D) laboratories.

Graduates may also continue their academic careers by applying to graduate programs offered by the Institute of Science and the Institute of Health Sciences at Mersin University or other universities.

The Biology Program is continuously updated in line with the Bologna Process and aligned with both national and international qualification frameworks. The undergraduate program lasts eight semesters (four years) and includes both lecture-based and practical courses. To graduate, students must complete 240 ECTS credits and achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 out of 4.00.

Additionally, all students are required to complete an internship in a workplace relevant to the field of biology, which helps them integrate theoretical knowledge with practical experience.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded the Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Mersin University.
