About the Department
The Garden Agriculture Program is a 2-year associate programme offered as formal education within the Department of Plant and Animal Production of the Vocational School of Silifke, which was founded in 1994. The programme focuses on teaching the principles and practices of horticultural production, especially the cultivation of vegetables, fruits, vineyards and ornamental plants.
Students gain theoretical and applied knowledge in the cultivation of garden plants, greenhouse and soilless (hydroponic) growing techniques, seed and seedling production, plant nutrition and fertilization, irrigation, plant protection, and harvesting and post-harvest processes. The programme's strong academic staff offers students a quality education in both theory and practice.
The Vocational School of Silifke has strong infrastructure for horticultural practice: a 500 m² glasshouse, a 150 m² soilless culture area and a 120 m² glasshouse for ornamental plants; outdoors, vegetables such as tomato, eggplant, cucumber, pepper and melon, as well as various fruits, are grown. Students reinforce their theoretical training by practicing in the gardens under supervision using these facilities.
Career Opportunities
With the title of 'Agricultural Technician,' graduates of the programme can work in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and its affiliated institutions, in greenhouses and agricultural enterprises, in seedling/sapling production facilities, in agricultural input companies such as seeds, fertilizers and crop protection, and in private sector organizations. They can also establish and run their own agricultural businesses. With a sufficient score in the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS), graduates can transfer to the relevant departments of the Faculty of Agriculture and earn the title of agricultural engineer.
