GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

1. Name of The Programme: Laborant and Veterinary Health Programme

2. Laborant and Veterinary Health Programme; will be conducted under Mersin University Vocational School of Technical Sciences.

3. The language of the education is Turkish and there won’t be any preparatory class.

4. THE CONTINUITY OF THE STUDENT SOURCE-WHICH PROVINCE

Mersin province cattle and sheep farm animals are especially a place where goat breeding is concentrated. This program is not available at another university near Mersin and students will be expected to come from the other provinces near Mersin like Hatay, Niğde, Adana, Osmaniye, Konya, Karaman, Aksaray, and Kahramanmaraş.

Another advantage of this programme is students have the ability to continue their education and get promoted

5. EMPLOYMENT OF THE GRADUATED STUDENTS

Livestock businesses, animal feed factories, agriculture businesses, private veterinary clinics that are placed in this area will provide opportunities for employment. There are still many livestock businesses that are active in Mersin. Most of these are focused on the dairy farming. As it is well known, dairy farming is a labor intensive field and it requires veterinary services. Sometimes, businesses that are operating in Mersin are requesting graduated students from our Vocational School of Technical Sciences that are eligible to work on their field and we cannot meet their demands. It is obvious that veterinarian technician is needed in the field.

6. Graduated students from this programme will be named as “Laborant and Veterinary Health Technician”

7. They can work in field of preventive medicine where as the lackness of the veterinarians. The work with veterinarians in the field os animal health, breeding, production and improvement. Livestock businesses, animal feed factories, agriculture businesses, private veterinary clinics that are placed in this area will provide opportunities for employment. There are still many livestock businesses that are active in Mersin. Most of these are focused on the dairy farming. 8. A) Programme Proficiencies

a. To ensure the regular operation of the laboratory equipment and to use it effectively,

b. To apply laboratory hygiene and safety consciously,

c. Taking microbiological, biochemical, parasitological, pathological and feed samples, processing and applying necessary tests,

d. To apply hygiene, care and health services as veterinary assistants in animal hospitals, private veterinary clinics and farms,

e. To apply measures related to prevention from epidemics, infectious and zoonotic diseases,

f. To be able to determine the mating time of animals and to carry out artificial insemination under the responsibility of overage and veterinarian, to recognize and follow normal and pregnancy and birth process,

g. To bring the efficiency of the operator to the highest level by providing the necessities of animal welfare,

h. Taking preventive measures and informing the veterinarian on time about the important problems of animals, fertility, breast and foot health,

I. To ensure proper care and feeding of animals,

j. To be able to apply the treatment protocols recommended by the veterinarian,

k. To use the registration and archiving system in laboratory and veterinary health field,

l. To be able to have scientific formation and team work on professional and social ethical values.

B) Number of credits and training course

Students who want to graduate from this program must complete 120 AKTS within 2 and 4 periods of time. And, The internship period is 40 (fourty) business days.

9. Internship period is is obligatory in this programme. There is no trouble abut students to find places to finish their intership period. Private veterinary clinic in Mersin allow them also we have a protocol with Mersin Breeding cattle Association. Also student may finish this period in the veterinary clinics in their own cities.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Veterinary Medicine program can work as technicians and mid-level professionals in public institutions and the private sector. They may also continue to bachelor's degree programs through the Vertical Transfer Examination (DGS).
