About the Department

Mission

The Mapping and Cadastre Associate Degree Program aims to train mapping and cadastre technicians who possess the necessary knowledge and skills in contemporary surveying techniques, geographic information systems, and cadastre legislation, who can effectively utilize technology, adhere to professional ethical values, and meet the need for qualified intermediate personnel in the public and private sectors.

Vision

To be a preferred, innovative, and respected associate degree program in the field of mapping and cadastre at national and international levels, closely following scientific and technological developments, and whose graduates make a difference in the sector with their application-oriented education approach.

Establishment Information

The Mapping and Cadastre Program was established in 2002 under the Technical Programs Department of Mersin Vocational School. The first students enrolled in the 2002-2003 academic year, and the first graduates were born in 2004. After 2004, education and training continued under the Technical Programs Department of the Vocational School of Technical Sciences. In 2009, it was incorporated into the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning with the newly established ISCED 97 system.

Program Purpose

Mapping Technicians, who create and apply maps and mapping information for many engineering projects, play critical roles in all public works projects, particularly urban and rural land development. Information technologies such as geographic information systems, global positioning, and remote sensing, which have become particularly prominent in recent years, constitute the responsibilities of Mapping Technicians. The department aims to train expert technical personnel in areas such as land and industrial surveying, evaluation and location determination, information system development and querying, location data application, and legal and technical assessment of real estate ownership, all of which are required by the public and private sectors, using modern technologies.

Rules Regarding the Recognition of Prior Learning (formal, informal, non-formal)

The process of recognizing prior learning in Turkish higher education institutions is still in its infancy. Therefore, recognition of prior learning has not been fully implemented in all programs at Mersin University. However, exemption exams are administered at the beginning of each semester for courses such as English, which are included in the compulsory curricula of departments. Students who have completed the self-learning process in these courses or who believe they have achieved the learning outcomes in these courses through alternative methods are eligible to take these exams. Successful students are exempt from the relevant course in the curriculum.

To earn the title of Surveying and Cadastre Technician in the Surveying and Cadastre program, students must:

a) Successfully complete all courses in the curriculum,

b) Achieve a minimum GPA of 60 out of 100,

c) Complete a mandatory 20-day professional experience internship.

Program Profile

The Surveying and Cadastre Program provides theoretical and practical training in surveying fields, such as map design, production, land surveying, and land registry and cadastre, in addition to basic science courses. The program's primary goal is to train technicians who possess the knowledge required by rapidly developing science and technology, the skills to apply this knowledge to practice, and the ability to analyze and synthesize.

While the final grade varies by course, the midterm exam, any midterm work, and the final exam generally contribute 40% of the total grade. All exams are graded out of 100. At the end of each semester, students may take a make-up exam for the courses they failed in that semester.

Graduation Requirements

Students who successfully complete all courses in the program (120 ECTS credits in total), achieve a weighted grade point average of 60, and complete a professional internship are awarded an associate degree in Mapping and Cadastre. This diploma corresponds to level five of education within the European Qualifications Framework.
