About the Department

1. Department Information

Mersin University, closely monitoring the changes and developments in the healthcare sector in our country, aims to meet the sector's growing need for intermediate personnel with its associate degree healthcare program, the Department of Medical Services and Techniques. Our department trains well-educated, technically equipped medical technicians in their respective fields. The Opticianry program, established under the Department of Medical Services and Techniques, is a four-semester program that aims to prepare future opticians and meet the growing need for personnel in the opticianry sector.The department offers theoretical courses, along with practical laboratory courses, taught by expert faculty members.

2. Historical Development

The Department of Medical Services and Techniques, established within the Mersin University School of Technical Sciences, aims to equip graduates with all the professional knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary to practice opticianry. To this end, in 2017, it added competent faculty members to its academic staff and commenced its first students in the 2018-2019 academic year. The Optometry Program aims to provide our country with qualified, high school graduate healthcare technicians who are trained to supply and provide patient-specific optical devices designed for the correction and correction of vision impairments.

The Optometry Program develops effectively and efficiently in line with our university's mission, vision, goals, and objectives. It establishes a respected quality culture consistent with its quality management approach, and utilizes modern equipment and classrooms to meet all the needs and expectations of our stakeholders. Our optics program, established in 2015 within the University's School of Technical Sciences, aims to train idealistic, highly qualified, and highly qualified healthcare technicians, a skill the industry requires, and continues its efforts in this direction. Our department has one laboratory, currently in active use and equipped with modern optics equipment. Our education and training activities continue with five (5) faculty members: two Professors, one Associate Professor, and two Assistant Professors.

Our program has 102 active students in the spring semester of 2022-2023, 164 active students in the fall semester of 2023-2024, and 205 active students in the fall semester of 2024-2025.
