About the Department
Program Information: Opticianry gained legal professional status in Turkey in 1940 with the Opticianry Law No. 3958. In 1992, by decision of the Higher Education Council (YÖK), it was decided to open Opticianry programs at vocational schools. This process, which began under the title of technical optician, enabled graduates of the Opticianry program to open opticianry establishments with the title 'Optician' following the Opticianry Law No. 5193 that entered into force in 2004. Until 2013 students could enroll without an examination; by decision of the Higher Education General Assembly dated 10.04.2012, admission by examination began in the 2013-2014 academic year. The Mersin University Opticianry Program was opened in 2015 and began admitting students for the 2018-2019 academic year. The program has six academic staff members. Purpose of the Program: The Opticianry program aims to train well-educated, qualified medical technicians who provide patients with the tools necessary for the correction and elimination of vision disorders.
Career Opportunities
Graduates can work as health technicians in public and private hospitals, oral and dental health centres, medical laboratories, imaging centres and related health institutions. They can transfer to related undergraduate programmes through the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS).
