Faculty Members from Our University Contributed to the Aydıncık Municipality Occupational Health and Safety Symposium

The Occupational Health and Safety Symposium, organized by the Aydıncık Municipality with the support of our university, was held on Monday, September 14, at the Lütfi Elvan Cultural Center of the Aydıncık Municipality. The symposium addressed current issues in the field of occupational health and safety, practices in public and local administrations, and strategies for emergency situations.
Emphasis on Collaboration in Occupational Health and Safety
Levent Muştu, Branch Director representing the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality’s Department of Health Services, attended the symposium’s opening ceremony. During the program, which addressed various aspects of occupational health and safety, attention was drawn to the importance of collaboration among public institutions, local governments, universities, and relevant organizations. Following the opening session, the symposium proceeded to the first session titled “Current Issues in Occupational Health and Safety.”
Current Issues and Local Government Practices Were Evaluated
In the first session, moderated by Prof. Dr. Zeki Yarar, Director of our University’s Occupational Health and Safety Application and Research Center, Dr. Bayram Ali Güvelioğlu, Head of Health Services in Disasters at the Mersin Provincial Health Directorate, spoke on “CBRN Threats and Protection Methods,” Saadet Özdemir Arsakay, Lecturer in the Department of Physics at our university’s Faculty of Science, discussed “The Importance of Artificial Intelligence in Occupational Health and Safety Applications,” while Derya Usanmaz, Assistant Director of our university’s Occupational Health and Safety Application and Research Center and Lecturer, addressed “Psychosocial Risk Factors.”
In the second session, titled “Occupational Health and Safety Practices in the Public Sector and Local Governments” and moderated by Serkan Gülerer, Asst. Prof. Aslıhan Toyoğlu from our university’s Occupational Health and Safety Application and Research Center presented on “OHS Management Systems and Their Applications in the Public Sector,” while Dr. Ali Özkurt, Occupational Safety Specialist at the Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, delivered a presentation titled “OSH Practices in Local Governments.”
Workshops and Closing
In the program’s third session, interactive workshops were conducted with the participants. In this segment, moderated by Prof. Dr. Zeki Yarar; “First Aid Practices for Emergencies in the OSH Field,” coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Leyla Bahar with contributions from Lecturer Aslıhan Toyoğlu, and “Fire and Fire Prevention Practices,” coordinated by Serkan Gülerer with contributions from Lecturer Derya Usanmaz, were discussed.
The symposium concluded with a closing ceremony following the general evaluations by the panel chairs. Key objectives highlighted during the program included the development of an OSH roadmap focused on local government, raising awareness of CBRN threats, strengthening collaboration among universities, local governments, and NGOs, and enhancing Aydıncık Municipality’s regional role in the field of occupational safety and health. Organized with the support of our university’s academic and expert staff, the symposium made a significant contribution to sharing current practices in the field of occupational safety and health and to strengthening cooperation among different institutions.
