The “Point of Change Project,” in Which Our University Is a Partner, Is Being Launched

The launch event for the “Point of Change Project”—which will be carried out under the auspices of the Mersin Governor’s Office, coordinated by the Provincial Health Directorate, and in collaboration with 15 public institutions and organizations, including our University—was held on Friday, September 25, at the Suphi Öner Teachers’ Residence.
A Holistic Approach to Combating Addiction
The launch meeting, chaired by Mersin Governor Atilla Toros, was attended by our University’s Vice Rector and Chair of the Addiction Commission, Prof. Dr. Mehmet İsmail Yağcı; our Rector’s Advisor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erhan Arslan; and Lecturer Deniz Yaramış, a member of the Addiction Commission.
In his opening remarks, Governor Atilla Toros emphasized that this program was not merely the launch of a project but rather the manifestation of a commitment that begins with the individual and extends to society, noting that young people are at the center of this effort. Noting that efforts to combat addiction involve not only security measures but also prevention, protection, treatment, and rehabilitation, Governor Toros stated, “Under the strong leadership of our President, we are strengthening a comprehensive approach that complements security measures with prevention, protection, treatment, and rehabilitation efforts in the fight against addiction.”
“Let’s Make a Difference Together, Let’s Change Together”
Emphasizing that the goal is not merely to keep young people away from risks but to help them forge strong bonds with life, Governor Toros reminded the youth in his address that change is always possible, saying, “A mistake, a wrong choice, a bad influence—none of these have to determine your future. People can change. Life can change. You just have to take that first step. When you take that first step, we’ll be right by your side,” he said.
Governor Atilla Toros concluded his speech with the words, “Let’s recognize it together. Let’s support each other. Let’s change it together.”
From Pilot Neighborhoods to Mersin-Wide
The “Point of Change Project” aims to reduce the risk of addiction, support individuals struggling with addiction and their families, and strengthen their psychosocial well-being. The project, which will be implemented in three neighborhoods selected as pilot areas, is planned to be expanded throughout Mersin based on the results obtained. The project focuses not only on treatment processes but also on supporting sports, culture and the arts, education, vocational and career development, employment opportunities, and social integration processes to steer young people away from the risk of addiction.
The launch event concluded with Governor Atilla Toros and the participants visiting the booths set up by the project partners.
