Top 100 in Sustainability: Our University’s GreenMetric Team Visited Our Rector, Prof. Dr Erol Yaşar

At our University, which has risen to 139th place globally and 13th in Turkey in the UI GreenMetric 2026 Sustainable Universities Ranking, the GreenMetric and Sustainability Teams met to evaluate the results achieved and discuss sustainability targets for the coming period.
The meeting, held in the Rectorate Senate Hall with the participation of our Rector, Prof. Dr Erol Yaşar, involved an assessment of our University’s performance in the GreenMetric 2026 rankings, whilst sustainability initiatives on campus and targets for 2027 were discussed in detail.
“Our Aim is to Take Success Further”
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, our Rector, Prof. Dr Erol Yaşar, noted that the progress our University has made in the field of sustainability in recent times is the result of a culture of collaborative work. Highlighting the importance of ensuring the sustainability of these achievements and further advancing our institution’s position in international rankings, Prof. Dr. Yaşar stated that new initiatives would continue to be implemented in line with our University’s goal of creating a greener, more environmentally conscious and sustainable campus.
The GreenMetric Process and Sustainability Initiatives Were Reviewed
At the meeting, our Rector’s Adviser, Prof. Dr Tuğba Yanpar, began by thanking our Rector for his leadership and support throughout this process, and then provided a brief overview of the work carried out as part of the GreenMetric process and our University’s approach to sustainability. Prof. Dr Yağmur Uysal, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Environment Research and Applications, then provided information on the work carried out in line with sustainable campus objectives and the initiatives planned for the coming period.
In a presentation delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr Osman Orhan, a member of the GreenMetric team, our University’s progression in the rankings from the past to the present, the 2026 results and its current standing by category were assessed in detail. The presentation, which addressed both areas of strength and those open to improvement, outlined a roadmap to be followed in pursuit of the goal of ranking amongst the world’s top 100 universities by 2027. The presentation specifically addressed plans to expand active zero-waste and recycling systems across the campus, to integrate sustainability practices more effectively into teaching and learning processes, to develop initiatives focused on energy and water efficiency, to increase sustainable transport practices, and to ensure the regular monitoring of sustainability indicators.

At the end of the meeting, our Rector, Prof. Dr Erol Yaşar; our Rector’s Adviser, Prof. Dr Tuğba Yanpar, Prof. Dr Yağmur Uysal, Assoc. Prof. Dr Osman Orhan and Dr Abdurahman Yasin Yiğit, who were responsible for the academic coordination of the UI GreenMetric 2026 process; and the Sustainability Ambassadors who contributed to the evaluation and reporting processes: Dr Deniz Uzunoğlu Doğruyol, Dr Gamze Koyuncu Türkay, Research Assistant Dr Semih Kahveci, Ali Çelik, Mahir Erkan, Ramazan Akkurt, Seyit Ahmet Nafiz Burnaz, Erdem Uysal, Uzay Gezer and Tahsin Çifçi, for their contributions and dedicated efforts.
The meeting concluded with the hope that sustainability initiatives would continue to be strengthened with the participation of all units of our University in line with the 2027 targets, followed by a group photograph.
