Tarihçe

The Department of Physics was established as one of the six departments of the Faculty within Mersin University Faculty of Arts and Sciences with Law No. 3837 adopted by the Turkish Grand National Assembly on July 3, 1992. It started education in the 1994-1995 academic year and graduated its first students in 1998. The Physics department, which started education with 2 assistant professors and 1 research assistant, continues education today with eight professors, two associate professors, two assistant professors, and one research assistant. With Presidential Decree No. 5868 dated July 25, 2022, this faculty was closed and replaced by the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The department continues education as one of five departments within the Faculty of Science. Our graduates who have graduated with a Physics undergraduate diploma from our department have found the opportunity to work as researcher academics primarily at the Ministry of National Education and at various universities in Turkey and around the world. In addition, we have graduates who have successfully continued their lives by establishing their own businesses.
In 2011, the preferability of our department decreased, experiencing the student deprivation faced by basic sciences at other universities in Turkey, but in 2015 it became preferable again with quota restrictions being lifted. It has gained an international dimension in education by becoming among the preferences of foreign national students as well.
Our department's faculty members contribute to academic research and education at the Physics department of the Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, in addition to courses in the physics undergraduate program. They also ensure the delivery of Physics-content courses included among basic science courses at other faculties of our University.
There are four sub-departments within our department:
i. General Physics
ii. Solid State Physics
iii. Atomic and Molecular Physics
iv. Nuclear Physics.
