HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT
Mersin University, Faculty of Fine Arts was established pursuant to Law No. 3837 dated July 3, 1992, and commenced education in the 1993-1994 academic year by admitting 20 students to the Department of Painting. Among the departments included in the founding legislation; the Departments of Sculpture and Graphics began operations in the 1994-1995 academic year, the Department of Stage Arts in the 1996-1997 academic year, and the Departments of Ceramics and Textile in the 2000-2001 academic year by admitting students. Due to insufficient teaching staff and physical conditions, student admissions to the Department of Stage Arts were suspended starting from the 2004-2005 academic year. Although the Departments of Cinema-TV, Music, and Photography are included in the organizational chart, students cannot be admitted as the infrastructure and physical conditions have not yet been completed. As of 2021, the name of the Textile Department was changed to Textile and Fashion Design, and the name of the Graphics Department was changed to Graphic Arts.
Since 1993, the young, dynamic, and competent artist-faculty members of our Faculty have been organizing national and international art events, participating in such events, and receiving awards in competitions. In addition to fundamental classical art education, our educational program is designed to cultivate students with high creative ability who embrace contemporary art understanding and can produce original works.
Accordingly, many of our students have participated in national and international art organizations such as biennials and triennials, received awards in competitions, and benefited from international student exchange programs to study at universities in European Union countries with which we have agreements. For these reasons, we have become an educational institution that is preferred in a short time and recognized for its achievements. Through the art and cultural events organized by our Faculty, our University as well as the city of Mersin and Turkey are being promoted in the best possible way on the international platform. All these achievements have brought new responsibilities to our faculty members and students. With this awareness; working with faith and dedication to reach better, more beautiful goals and to set new targets has become a necessity for us in the name of art.
