About the Department
Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary field of science that covers a vast research area, extending from basic sciences to medical and engineering sciences. It combines the knowledge base from fundamental sciences like physics, chemistry, and biology, along with expertise in medicine, agriculture, and engineering. In this regard, biotechnology encompasses many sub-disciplines such as nanobiotechnology, gene therapy, biomedical engineering, and protein and enzyme biotechnology.
Mersin University Department of Biotechnology offers research-based education that equips students with skills in molecular-level thinking, analysis, and application. Students reinforce their theoretical knowledge and gain practical experience through laboratory courses and research projects conducted under the guidance of specialized academics.
Thanks to the strong biotechnology foundation they acquire, department graduates have a wide range of employment opportunities in the health, food, environment, energy, and agriculture sectors; they can also pursue careers as scientists by continuing their postgraduate education. The department also offers its students the opportunity to gain international experience before graduation through Erasmus+ agreements with European universities.
